What to Expect at an AA Meeting

Alcoholics Anonymous is a free fellowship of people who help each other stay sober. There are no fees, no commitments, and no requirement other than a desire to stop drinking. Meetings are held in churches, community centers, and dedicated club rooms; you can walk in to any open meeting without calling ahead.

If you've never been to a meeting before, an Open meeting is the right one to start with — anyone is welcome, including family members and people who just want to learn about AA. Closed meetings are for people who identify as having a desire to stop drinking themselves. Big Book meetings read and discuss passages from AA's main text; Step Study meetings work through the Twelve Steps in sequence.

Not sure where to start? Call (866) 409-9613 any time. We can help you find the right meeting and talk through what to expect. Free, confidential, no commitment.
